Canon FD 28mm f/2.8 S.C

Canon FD 28mm f/2.8 S.C. is a manual-focus wide-angle lens for Canon FD-mount cameras, introduced in the mid-1970s and designed for landscape, architecture, reportage, travel, and everyday photography on 35mm film. The 28 mm focal length provides a wide yet natural perspective, while the f/2.8 maximum aperture allows shooting in a variety of lighting conditions while keeping the lens compact. The optical construction consists of 7 elements in 7 groups, with a 5-blade diaphragm and a minimum aperture of f/22; minimum focusing distance is 0.30 m and maximum magnification is approximately 0.134x. The filter thread measures 55 mm. The S.C. designation refers to Canon’s Spectra Coating, developed to improve contrast and color reproduction while reducing internal reflections and flare compared with less advanced coatings. Canon produced two main versions of the FD 28mm f/2.8 S.C., one introduced in 1975 and another in 1977, both sharing the same optical formula but featuring minor differences in the aperture lever mechanism and weight: approximately 280 g for the first version and 230 g for the second. Its fully mechanical construction, aperture ring, and manual focusing make the lens particularly suitable for classic Canon FD film cameras and, via an adapter, for modern mirrorless systems where it operates in manual focus only. It is a compact and straightforward vintage lens valued mainly for its rendering character, small size, and compatibility with the classic Canon FD system.
