Canon FD 20mm f/2.8

Canon FD 20mm f/2.8 is a manual-focus ultra-wide-angle lens for Canon FD-mount cameras, designed for landscape, architecture, interiors, reportage, and creative photography on 35mm film. The 20 mm focal length provides a very wide angle of view, while the f/2.8 maximum aperture allows shooting in lower light while maintaining good control over depth of field. Two main versions exist: the Canon FD 20mm f/2.8 S.S.C., introduced in 1973, and the later New FD 20mm f/2.8 from 1979; both use an optical construction of 10 elements in 9 groups, a 6-blade diaphragm, a minimum aperture of f/22, a minimum focusing distance of 25 cm, and a 72 mm filter thread. The FD 20mm f/2.8 S.S.C. uses Super Spectra Coating and a floating focusing mechanism developed to maintain good performance at close distances, weighs approximately 345 g, and measures about 75 × 58 mm; the New FD 20mm f/2.8 retains the same optical concept but uses a lighter and more compact barrel, weighing around 305 g and measuring approximately 76.5 × 58 mm. Its fully mechanical construction, aperture ring, and manual focusing make the lens suitable both for classic Canon FD film bodies and, via an adapter, for modern mirrorless cameras, where it operates in manual focus only. Canon FD 20mm f/2.8 is therefore a compact and relatively fast vintage ultra-wide lens, suitable for users looking for a very broad perspective, classic Canon FD rendering, and good versatility across film and adapted digital systems.
