The Leica M4-P Silver Chrome is a mechanical 35mm film rangefinder camera introduced in 1980 as a direct evolution of the M4-2 model. The device features a die-cast zinc top plate with a silver chrome finish and a camera body based on the M-series chassis. The defining technical feature of this model is the 0.72x magnification viewfinder system which integrates, for the first time, six frame lines coupled in pairs (28/90 mm, 35/135 mm, and 50/75 mm), expanding optical compatibility compared to previous models. The mechanical rubberized silk focal-plane shutter operates over a range of speeds from 1 second to 1/1000th of a second, plus Bulb (B), with X-sync flash synchronization at 1/50th of a second via the hot shoe or dual PC sockets on the rear. The camera is factory-ready for use with external motor drives (Winder M or Motor M) through the mechanical coupling on the base. Film loading is performed via the rapid three-prong system and rewinding is handled by the slanted crank located on the top plate. Like other M-series models without electronic components, the M4-P lacks an internal light meter and a self-timer, requiring manual adjustment of all exposure parameters.
