The Nikon AF 70-210mm f/4-5.6 D is a telephoto zoom lens designed for the Nikon SLR system with an F-mount, characterized by a compact design and a predominantly metal mechanical construction. This version, identified by the letter D, integrates a microchip capable of communicating the subject distance to the camera body, optimizing the precision of the 3D Matrix metering system and flash output. The optical design is configured to offer sharp rendering and balanced contrast throughout the zoom range, with a variable maximum aperture ranging from f/4 at 70mm to f/5.6 at the maximum extension of 210mm. The zoom system is a linear sliding type, commonly referred to as push-pull, which allows for rapid focal length variation with a single hand movement. The autofocus speed is significantly higher than the previous non-D version, thanks to a reduction in the internal gear ratio that requires fewer rotations of the camera’s motor to achieve focus. The lens retains the manual aperture ring, ensuring compatibility with both analog and digital SLR cameras equipped with mechanical coupling.
